Local training workshop

Local training workshops (LTW) are formative learning experience in which researchers are brought together to work on the development of a multidisciplinary project. These workshops answer to the need to prepare the researchers to the development of a real project in which the acquired knowledge needs to be applied to the solution of practical problems. They will train the researchers to work in team with a common goal and taking up different roles (team leader, project manager, domain specialist, etc.).

The first LTW will follow the second network training school and will be dedicated specifically to the advances on the topics related to modelling & simulation, and impact prediction & risk analysis. Organised by Astronomy Observatory of Belgrade and University of Pisa, it will last for 3 days and will include presentations from all full members, one round table discussion and 2 concurrent working sessions in which the working groups will meet and discuss their progress.

The second LTW will be organised by DFKI and Dinamica will consolidate the results of all the working groups researching active removal and/or deflection of uncooperative targets. Similar to the first workshop, it last for 3 days and will include presentations from all members, one round table discussion and 2 concurrent working sessions.

Global virtual workshops

Given the global nature of the asteroid and debris threat, the involvement of non-European countries is vital to expose the researchers to existing and future initiatives in other leading countries like the USA and Japan. This exposure would normally be implemented though the invitation of key visiting researchers from outside Europe. This mechanism however limits the training experience to the direct contact with only few scholars. A much wider and more articulated experience can be obtained through Global Virtual Workshops (GVW).

GVW will be joint workshops with one or more institutions outside Europe and will be implemented through internet media like Skype. The idea of GVW is to have all the working groups within this network meeting at the premises of one of the partners and working together for 3 days on their projects as for LTW. Unlike LTW, however, one of the two days is dedicated to a video conference event with other working groups located, for example, in the US and Japan. During the video conference the reseachers will deliver presentations and attend the presentations of the working groups in the extra-European countries. The GVW will also involve all visiting researcher who will organize the GVW on their side. Thanks to the use of internet media this network will be able to involve many more scholars than what could be invited as visiting researchers, broadening the training experience to many more sources of knowledge than usual.

Each workshop will run for 4 days at different locations around Europe. The first GVW, held during 2014, will be organised by Strathclyde with presentations from all the full partners and non-European participants. The second workshop, held during 2016, will be organised by the University of Southampton, and will focus on the active removal/deflection of uncooperative targets.
